What Changed

Every release, newest first.

Latest: 0.8.122

If updating from inside the app fails with "Update failed", download the current version from the website once and install it over the old one. Updates from the app work again after that, and accounts without administrator rights are asked for an administrator password instead of failing.

51 Earlier Releases

Version 0.8.117

10 September 2026

  • Folder comparison works with cloud storage again.
  • Network shares remember their password, so you are not asked for it again after a restart.
  • Copying moves several files at once, including to and from cloud storage, and the Transfers window shows each file with its own speed.
  • Sync Folders now opens on the option that only adds files and never deletes.

Version 0.8.116

9 September 2026

  • When a copy cannot finish, the message now counts the files that were copied and the files that were not, and confirms that every original is still where it was.
  • iCloud Drive now lists the same app folders Finder lists. Folders left behind by apps you removed no longer appear.
  • An app folder in iCloud Drive appears once, instead of two or three times under the same name.
  • The tab, the folder trail and the pane now all call iCloud Drive by its name.

Version 0.8.115 Security and Compatibility Fixes

9 September 2026

  • Moving files to a network drive now finishes instead of stopping partway.
  • A file that turns up at the destination after you were asked about the others is no longer replaced without asking.
  • Files named with numbers now sort 1, 2, 3, 10 instead of 1, 10, 11, 2, and folders sort by size when folder sizes are shown.
  • Opening a folder no longer makes another app flash on screen, and controls in dialogs no longer overlap in a narrow window.

Version 0.8.114

9 September 2026

  • Moving and copying files to a NAS or network drive works again.
  • Adding files to a zip stored on a network drive works too.

Version 0.8.113

9 September 2026

  • Sync Folders now works with the folders you have added under Remotes, and the plan appears right away.
  • A sync that would delete something on a remote tells you first, because that cannot be undone.

Version 0.8.112

9 September 2026

  • Folders on a cloud or network remote come back when you reopen the app or load a workspace.
  • The Compress window shows the real size of each file instead of 0 bytes.
  • Right-click a .gz file to open or extract it, and any file to reveal its folder in a new tab.
  • Edit Tags can now rename and delete a tag.
  • The app checks for a new version once a day, not only when it starts.
  • Dialog titles share one style, the search location list stays under its field, and quitting is quicker.

Version 0.8.111

8 September 2026

  • Fixed: iCloud Drive now lists the app folders Finder lists there, under the names Finder uses, instead of every folder every app has ever made.
  • New: a switch to leave the app folders out of iCloud Drive altogether, in Settings, General.
  • Fixed: running the setup assistant again no longer leaves you stuck on the terms screen, with nothing to click and no way to quit.
  • Fixed: a move that runs out of room says how much space it needs in gigabytes, the way the rest of the app does.
  • Fixed: copying or moving to a network share is no longer refused for lack of space the share has.

Version 0.8.110

8 September 2026

  • Shared network folders that need a user name with a domain now connect.

Version 0.8.109

8 September 2026

  • New: the app icon now comes in a dark version. Turn it on in System Settings, Appearance, under Icon and widget style.

Version 0.8.108

8 September 2026

  • Fixed: an SSH key written with a ~ in its path is found again.
  • Fixed: sorting a Google Drive folder no longer adds rows that are not there.
  • Fixed: an update keeps the size and position of your window.
  • Fixed: the buttons at the bottom of the update window stay put while you read the notes.
  • Fixed: entering a folder puts the cursor on its first item, and going up puts it on the folder you left.
  • New: an optional “..” row at the top of a folder, so you can go up with the arrows and Return. Settings, General.
  • New: the app artwork in About and Onboarding now follows your dark theme.
  • Fixed: copying to a network drive no longer slows down part of the way through.
  • Fixed: an empty file copied to a network drive now arrives, instead of being reported as damaged and removed.

Version 0.8.107

7 September 2026

  • Fixed: Duplicate in the right-click menu makes the copy straight away and names it for you, instead of stopping to ask about a name that is already taken.
  • Fixed: dates in the file list follow the region set in System Settings, so they are written the same way as everywhere else on your Mac.
  • The two cards on the Remotes step of the welcome screens have space between them.

Version 0.8.106

7 September 2026

  • A licence that has not yet been checked by the server gets checked before anything else, so an update after a long break keeps Pro.

Version 0.8.105 Security and Compatibility Fixes

7 September 2026

  • Licence records now carry a signature from the licensing service. Existing licences keep working; nothing to do.

Version 0.8.104 Security and Compatibility Fixes

7 September 2026

  • Settings › About now has a Licences page listing every open source component the app is built from.
  • Licence records are being moved to server-signed ones in the background. Existing licences keep working; nothing to do.

Version 0.8.103 Security and Compatibility Fixes

7 September 2026

  • Fixed: a cloud transfer that the server reported as failed is never counted as done, and a cancelled one is stopped rather than left running.
  • Fixed: files whose names differ only in capitalisation move to a case-sensitive server as two files again.
  • Improved: selecting thousands of files and moving them starts faster.

Version 0.8.102

6 September 2026

  • Fixed: the Trash shows what the Finder shows, including items deleted from iCloud Drive and from a connected drive, and it updates on its own when something new lands there.
  • Fixed: Empty Trash removes locked items, read-only folders and apps, and it tells you from the Trash itself what is left rather than from what it tried.
  • Fixed: copies to a network drive no longer report details the drive cannot keep.
  • Fixed: closing a full-screen window brings you back to the desktop.
  • Fixed: deleting a folder no longer shows an error afterwards.
  • Changed: moving files to the Trash no longer asks first. You can turn the question back on in Settings, under Safety.

Version 0.8.101 Security and Compatibility Fixes

6 September 2026

  • Fixed: comparing two folders and applying the result, or extracting an archive, can no longer overwrite a file that appeared while you were looking at it.
  • Fixed: trashing a selection that spans a network drive and your Mac asks about each drive, instead of deleting the files on your Mac for good.
  • Fixed: dragging files in from another app uses the keys you were holding when you dropped them, even if you press a different key while answering a question.
  • Fixed: files you have made private stay private while they are being copied.
  • Fixed: moving a symbolic link to another disk moves the link, instead of copying everything it points at, and a folder keeps the permissions it had.
  • Improved: copying or moving a large folder to another disk asks the disk to do half as much work for the same safety.

Version 0.8.100 Security and Compatibility Fixes

5 September 2026

  • Fixed: replacing a file on a network drive or cloud remote never deletes the file you replaced unless the new copy was verified byte for byte; otherwise the old copy is kept beside it.
  • Fixed: if a move to a network drive cannot remove the original afterwards, the copy that arrived is never undone.
  • Fixed: when the app cannot check a destination folder, it stops and says so instead of writing into it.
  • Fixed: moving, trashing or deleting thousands of files at once is fast again.
  • Fixed: two files whose names differ only in capitalisation are never merged into one on a network drive or cloud remote; the move is refused and says which two.

Version 0.8.99

5 September 2026

  • Group files by kind, date, size or tag from View Options, and edit a file's tags from the right-click menu.
  • Rename, delete and move entries inside a zip or tar archive without unpacking it, and open or create password-protected zips.
  • Press Control+Space or Option+Space to show the size of the selected folders, and delete several apps with their leftover files in one go.
  • Fixed a stray blue line in a narrow window, the bottom bars getting cut off in a short window, and a Shift+arrow selection running off the screen.

Version 0.8.98 Security and Compatibility Fixes

5 September 2026

  • Copying a folder into one of its own subfolders is refused before anything is written.
  • The drag setting is now a choice: follow the drive like the Finder, always move, or always copy. Option copies and Command moves for one drag.
  • Mouse thumb buttons go back and forward, and a middle click opens a folder in a new tab or closes a tab.
  • iCloud Drive lists app folders under the app's name, and the path bar names them the way the Finder does.
  • A double-click on the title bar minimizes, zooms or does nothing, as set in System Settings.
  • A new setting stops the arrow keys at the ends of the list.
  • The pane scrollbar stays faint at rest on every input device, and the toolbar folds only where it runs out of room.
  • The Process Manager reuses its tab, and the Disk Analyzer can scan your home folder from a tool tab.
  • A video on another drive opens with a player that reads nothing until you press play.
  • An untracked file in a Git folder shows as one added block in the diff.

Version 0.8.97 Security and Compatibility Fixes

5 September 2026

  • Replacing a file on a network drive or cloud folder now keeps the old copy until the new one has fully arrived.
  • Moving files to another drive checks every file, folders included, before the originals are removed.
  • Deleting one file in a cloud folder never removes the folder around it.
  • Merging folders on a network drive follows the choice you make in the dialog: keep the newer, keep the existing, or keep both.
  • Moving an empty folder to a network drive no longer leaves the original behind.
  • If the app is interrupted while replacing a file on a network drive, the next launch puts the original back.
  • The Leftovers scanner and App Deleter only suggest files that belong to the app being removed.

Version 0.8.96 Security and Compatibility Fixes

5 September 2026

  • Fixed: updating from inside the app failed with "Update failed" and nothing was installed.
  • Installing an update on an account without administrator rights now asks for an administrator password instead of failing.

Version 0.8.95 Security and Compatibility Fixes

4 September 2026

  • Fixed: merging a folder into an existing folder on a network drive or cloud remote no longer deletes what was already there.
  • Fixed: if replacing a folder fails partway, your original folder is put back, and if it cannot be put back the app tells you exactly where it is.
  • Fixed: a folder move can no longer remove the original folder when nothing was actually copied.

Version 0.8.94 Security and Compatibility Fixes

4 September 2026

  • Fixed an update that could stop with a signature error when the download did not arrive complete. It is now retried and reported properly.

Version 0.8.93 Security and Compatibility Fixes

4 September 2026

  • Updates now install on accounts without administrator rights, asking for an admin password when one is needed.
  • Moving a protected item to the Trash now asks for permission instead of refusing.
  • The preview pane changes side as soon as you pick a new position in Settings.
  • Used and available disk space now update after you empty the Trash.

Version 0.8.92 Security and Compatibility Fixes

4 September 2026

  • Fixed: copying and pasting a file into the folder it is already in duplicates it again.
  • Fixed: a move on a network share or cloud remote could delete the file when the destination named it a second way.

Version 0.8.91 Security and Compatibility Fixes

4 September 2026

  • Fixed: a file replaced during a move or copy now goes to the Trash instead of being deleted.
  • Fixed: a move never removes your file before the copy at the destination has been checked.
  • Fixed: after a move that did not finish, the details say where every one of your files is now.
  • Fixed: moving files while an earlier move of the same files is still running is refused instead of running twice.
  • Fixed: recovering after a crash never deletes the only copy of a file.
  • New: the app refuses to move or delete a whole disk or a whole home folder at once.

Version 0.8.90 Security and Compatibility Fixes

3 September 2026

  • Fixed: moving or copying an item into the folder it is already in could delete it.
  • Fixed: moving a folder into a folder of the same name further up could delete both it and the folder it was in.
  • A move that fails now always leaves your file either where it was or where it was going, never neither.

Version 0.8.89

3 September 2026

  • Adding a OneDrive account works for personal accounts whose drive Microsoft lists under an id it then refuses.

Version 0.8.88

3 September 2026

  • New: select some items, right-click, and choose New Folder with Selection to put them into a new folder.
  • When you update from more than one version behind, the update notes now list every version you skipped.
  • Adding a OneDrive account works when the first drive it lists cannot be opened.

Version 0.8.87

3 September 2026

  • Adding a OneDrive account works again.

Version 0.8.86

3 September 2026

  • Fixed the sign-in dialog for network servers being cut off on the right when the server has a long name.
  • Copying files larger than about 4 MB from an SFTP server works again.
  • Copying folders from an SFTP server works again.

Version 0.8.85

3 September 2026

  • Folders now copy and move to network servers and phones, not just the files inside them.
  • Network servers you find on your local network connect on the first click, and each one shows only once in the sidebar.
  • Dragging a file from a pane onto another app now works even when that app's window is in front.
  • A saved network share that needs its password again tells you so, instead of showing a confusing connection error.

Version 0.8.84

3 September 2026

  • On a Mac with company security software, activation works again. The app now trusts the same certificates your Mac trusts.
  • The app no longer quits unexpectedly while a window is being moved or resized.

Version 0.8.83

2 September 2026

  • The built-in terminal now always opens, even when a pane is showing a network location or a folder that has moved.
  • Tooltips now appear right next to the button or sidebar row they describe, and no longer break across several lines.

Version 0.8.82

2 September 2026

  • Command buttons can now sit in the toolbar or in a bar of their own along the bottom of the window.
  • Each button can show an icon, an icon with the command's name, or the name and its keyboard shortcut. Both settings are in Settings under General.
  • Hover hints are drawn by the app itself now, so they appear straight away and stay readable in dark themes.
  • The preview panel no longer cuts off its message when the panel is narrow.
  • The accent line under the active pane can be turned off in Settings under Appearance.
  • Settings, Advanced, has a new Logging and Diagnostics section. The log level is Error by default and you can raise it when support asks.
  • Diagnostics can record what the app does while you reproduce a problem, then save the file for you to attach to a feedback post or a mail.
  • Log files are rotated every day and at 20 MB, and at most ten are kept, so they can never fill a disk.
  • Save Current Log puts the active log file, or a zip of all of them, wherever you choose.

Version 0.8.81

2 September 2026

  • Fixed the empty gap that appeared under Favorites in the sidebar.

Version 0.8.80

2 September 2026

  • Favorites can be grouped. Drag a favorite under a heading, fold a group away, and rename either from its right-click menu.
  • A Favorites window opens from the star in the toolbar or with Command-B, and you can type to find one by name or by folder.
  • Control-Command-T adds the folder you are looking at to Favorites, or removes it.
  • The Go menu now lists your favorites.
  • Dragging a folder onto the line between two favorites adds it to Favorites. Dropping it on a favorite still moves the folder into it.
  • The Favorites section stays visible when it is empty, and shows you how to fill it.
  • Hide From Sidebar now works on drives, servers, remotes and cloud folders. Settings lists everything you have hidden, with Show and Show All to bring rows back.
  • The sidebar no longer shifts down when you start dragging a file over it.

Version 0.8.79

2 September 2026

  • When your year of updates is ending, you can add another year from the Plan section in Settings.
  • See and manage which Macs use your license from the Plan section in Settings.
  • License activation now tells you exactly what went wrong when it fails.
  • Copying to a network server or share now moves several files at once, and the Transfers window shows each file in flight with its own progress.
  • When a transfer fails, the message says what the destination refused and which file, and Copy Details carries everything a report needs.
  • Retry after a partly failed move sends only the files that did not arrive, and a file that already arrived is never reported as missing.
  • Identical error messages no longer pile up; one message shows how many times it happened.
  • The View menu no longer has a blank row in it, and its Show items now say Hide once the thing is showing.
  • The View menu ticks the view mode your pane is in.
  • Show Command Buttons sits with the toolbar setting and is greyed out while the toolbar is hidden.
  • The update window tells you which version you are on, not just the one you are moving to.
  • The theme button in the left strip now cycles Light, Dark and System, matching the setting.
  • Clicking the sidebar's edge no longer makes it jump. It only moves when you drag it.
  • Spinners no longer flash for folders that open instantly.
  • The floating sidebar's shadow is dark in dark mode instead of white.
  • Rows with striping now highlight in one colour under the pointer instead of two.
  • It is easier to see which pane you are working in.
  • Buttons in Settings react when you hover and press them.
  • Dropdowns keep their arrow while the pointer is over them.
  • Scrollbars keep one colour when the pointer leaves the pane.
  • The bottom bars read more cleanly, and the filter button is properly centred.
  • Right-click menus have clearer dividers, fewer repeated icons, and submenus that no longer flicker when you move across them.
  • Selected rows no longer show an arrow at the far right.

Version 0.8.78

1 September 2026

  • Copying to a server no longer slows down when you switch to another app.
  • Cancelling a copy now says it was cancelled instead of showing an error.
  • Copies finish sooner, and the end of a transfer tells you what it is doing.
  • You can now sign in to an SFTP server with a certificate.

Version 0.8.77

1 September 2026

  • Copying to and from network drives is faster, and the app now picks the quickest route on its own.
  • Every transfer has a Cancel button on its row, and cancelling one now says Cancelled instead of looking like it failed.
  • Copies to network drives start moving straight away instead of sitting at zero, and the app tells you when it is checking the copy at the end.
  • Pause and Resume now work for transfers to network drives.

Version 0.8.76

31 August 2026

  • Adding a cloud storage account works again.
  • Setting up a cloud account no longer asks you which region it is in.
  • Copying to and from servers and cloud storage starts faster.

Version 0.8.75

31 August 2026

  • Cloud storage and file servers now work out of the box, with nothing extra to install.
  • The setup wizard is simpler and no longer asks you to install anything.
  • Browsing folders on network servers is faster.
  • Empty Trash now empties only this Mac's own Trash and leaves connected drives and servers alone.

Version 0.8.74

30 August 2026

  • Empty Trash When Quitting is back in Settings and now works: turn it on and the Trash is emptied for good when you quit, with a progress note you can cancel.
  • Renaming, duplicating or dropping a file into a cloud folder no longer replaces a file that already has that name: the app asks first, or refuses.
  • The Disk Analyzer now asks before moving a file to the Trash from its right-click menu.
  • Undoing a Duplicate now sends the copy to the Trash instead of deleting it for good.
  • Two settings that never did anything have been removed.

Version 0.8.73

30 August 2026

  • Dragging a file out of a network folder into another app no longer crashes Salamander.
  • Network drives that require a secure connection now connect properly, just like in Finder.

Version 0.8.72

30 August 2026

  • The app no longer re-renders continuously in the background, which means lower CPU use, longer battery life and faster updates everywhere
  • Quick search and the Find pane now agree: quick search shows an honest "Showing 40 of N" with one click to see all results in Find
  • Pressing Return with several files selected opens Batch Rename; renaming, opening and the shortcut flavours now behave as the setting says in every pane and view
  • New options: Return can open files instead of renaming, the numeric keypad Enter can rename, and moving to the Trash can skip its confirmation. Deleting permanently always asks unless you explicitly turn that confirmation off in its own new setting
  • Two Safety switches that did nothing were removed; emptying the Trash on quit returns later as a real feature
  • After deleting files, the selection moves to the next file instead of disappearing
  • Batch Rename presets can be invoked directly with a keyboard shortcut
  • Batch Rename, Create Archive and Compress Image are now real windows that remember their size and position; the Batch Rename divider is draggable so long names fit
  • The Transfers window's settings link now focuses the one Settings window instead of misbehaving
  • Deleting a workspace asks in the Workspaces window itself
  • Borders and column dividers in dark themes are now clearly visible

Version 0.8.71

29 August 2026

  • Folders and files with umlauts or accents in their names now open normally, on this Mac and on network shares.
  • Back and Forward now land on the right folder when pressed quickly, and a move that fails no longer breaks them.

Version 0.8.70

29 August 2026

  • Copying a file in Finder and pasting it in Salamander now works
  • Batch Rename uses your replacement text exactly as typed, including when only the capitalisation changes
  • Utilities and system applications such as TV and Maps now appear under Applications
  • Back, forward, up and breadcrumb clicks work again in remote tabs, and Up at the top of a server no longer drops you on this Mac's disk
  • Quick View now follows the selection when you walk the list with the arrow keys

Version 0.8.69

29 August 2026

  • Dragging files onto a remote to copy or move them works again.
  • Adding a remote now asks which region your account is in, so signing in works outside the United States.
  • Adding a remote no longer saves settings you did not choose.
  • A remote an older version set up wrongly is now pointed out, with what to do about it.
  • A drive or share with no Trash now offers to delete the file instead of refusing.
  • When a drive cannot keep everything a file carries, the completion report says so. It previously always said nothing was lost.
  • The progress window no longer appears after a small copy has already finished.
  • Long messages can be read in full and copied.

Version 0.8.68

28 August 2026

  • Renaming and moving files in your own folders no longer fails with a warning about protected system files.
  • Copying to a network drive now finishes instead of stopping partway.
  • Customize Command Bar, Find Duplicates, Compare Folders, Sync Folders, Delete App and Related Files and Find Leftover Files are real windows you can move and resize, and they open in front of Settings.
  • The Settings link in the Transfers window opens on the Transfers tab again.

Version 0.8.67

27 August 2026

  • Settings now opens in its own window you can move and resize, and it no longer dims the app behind it.
  • Rows in every dark theme are striped again, so a long list is easier to read.
  • Dragging a file out of the window and back no longer locks the panel behind a highlight that would not clear.
  • Search opens in a panel over the window from the toolbar or the search shortcut, and the title bar shows the folder you are in.
